Relay, the Field Note article explainer

When you submit a question, the question and a bounded amount of the current conversation are sent to Gerry's Azure-hosted Relay service and Azure OpenAI. The response is grounded in the single published article you are reading and relevant Microsoft Well-Architected guidance; other articles and the broader portfolio profile are excluded from article requests. Raw conversations are not stored in Cosmos DB or written to application telemetry.

An email used to unlock Relay is retained only for the browser session. If you separately consent to a lead handoff, Relay sends Gerry a concise summary, not the raw transcript, and uses your email only as the reply-to address.

Field Notes newsletter

The newsletter uses double opt-in. Submitting the form sends a confirmation request; publication emails begin only after you explicitly confirm. Relay session emails are never added automatically, and newsletter consent is never preselected.

While subscribed, the service retains your email, consent record, subscription status, and minimal delivery state in an isolated Azure Cosmos DB container. Pending requests expire automatically. After you unsubscribe, the deliverable email value is removed within 30 days while a hashed suppression marker is retained so the address is not mailed again without a fresh opt-in.

Field Notes emails contain an authored summary and links to the full article, demo request, privacy notice, and unsubscribe controls. Newsletter engagement tracking is disabled. Delivery records contain no message body and expire after 90 days.

Bookings and service providers

Booking links open Microsoft Bookings, which manages scheduling, calendar conflicts, Teams meeting details, rescheduling, and cancellations under Microsoft's applicable privacy terms. This site also uses Microsoft Azure, Azure Communication Services, Azure Cosmos DB, and Azure OpenAI to provide the bounded functions described above.

Every newsletter email includes unsubscribe controls. To ask about your data or request deletion, email hello@gerrygunter.com. Do not submit passwords, secrets, private keys, regulated data, or confidential production details to Relay.
